Manchester United blows golden chance to clinch top four spot in ugly home draw vs. West Ham United

Getty Images

Manchester United blew a golden opportunity to take a command of a top-four spot in the Premier League on Wednesday, struggling in a poor 1-1 draw at home against West Ham United. The Hammers officially avoid relegation with the result. The Red Devils conceded a penalty late in the first half that Michail Antonio scored, but they got a goal early in the second half from Mason Greenwood to pull level. United had 40 minutes in the second half to get the winner but couldn’t, leaving everything to be decided this weekend.

Decision Day is on Sunday with the Reds facing Leicester City. If United wins or draws, they’ll qualify for the Champions League while a loss will likely see them miss out. There is a chance that the club could lose and still qualify if it ends up tied on points with Chelsea with the Red Devils having a superior goal differential.

Watch Liverpool vs. Chelsea: TV channel, live stream info, start time

Who’s Playing

Chelsea @ Liverpool

Current Records: Chelsea 19-11-6; Liverpool 30-3-3

What to Know

Liverpool took care of business against Chelsea on the road in the teams’ previous meeting last September and will be looking to do the same thing back at Anfield. They will face off against one another at 3:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Liverpool has a defense that allows only 0.81 goals per game, so Chelsea’s offense will have their work cut out for them.

Last Wednesday, the Reds lost 2-1 to Arsenal.

Speaking of close games: Chelsea dodged a bullet last week, finishing off Norwich City 1-0.

Liverpool got away with a 2-1 win in the teams’ previous meeting last September. Will they repeat their success, or does Chelsea have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

Manchester United vs. West Ham: Live stream, TV channel, how to watch Premier League online, news, odds

USATSI

Manchester United’s pursuit of a top-four spot in the Premier League continues on Wednesday as the Red Devils welcome West Ham to Old Trafford as part of Matchday 37. Ahead of Decision Day on Sunday, both teams are hoping to put themselves in a comfortable position. United can move into the top four with a draw, while a win would mean the team would only need a draw against Leicester City on Sunday to qualify for the Champions League. West Ham will be 100 percent safe from relegation with just one more point, though the team is likely already safe.

Here’s how you can watch the match and what to know:

Match informationDate: Wednesday, July 22Time: 1 p.m. ETLocation: Old Trafford — Manchester, EnglandTV: NBCSNLive stream: fuboTV (Try for free)Odds: Man. United -440; West Ham +550; Draw +1100 (via William Hill Sportsbook) Storylines

Manchester United: A golden chance here. If United wins, they take command of a top-four spot and then could lock it up with a draw at Leicester City. A loss or draw here likely makes Sunday’s game against the Foxes a must win. United’s season rides on these next two games, and because of that, expect Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernnades to both start in the middle.

West Ham: The Hammers are probably safe, but they will surely avoid relegation with just a point here. Though this team could lose out and get destroyed in goal differential, they are going to want to end the season on a high note for manager David Moyes, who hopes to convince the club he should get the full-time coaching gig. Expect Michail Antonio to lead the attack with his seven goals since play restarted being the most in the league.

Prediction

United finds its form and moves into third for the time being. Pick: United 3, West Ham 1

This year has been like any other due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and that includes the sports season. When the pandemic hit in March, sporting events around the world were canceled or postponed. Some leagues and tournaments were forced to cancel, others paused with the hope of restarting, but all had to adjust in some way.

“Bubbles” have been created for players to live, fans were not permitted at many events and new health protocols were in place for athletes.

Of the events canceled, the men’s and women’s NCAA championship tournaments, Wimbledon, the French Open (ATP/WTA), the Open Championship and The Players Championship are some of the biggest. The College World Series, Little League World Series and Baseball Hall of Fame induction were also canceled.

Juventus vs. Lazio: Live stream, TV channel, how to watch Serie A online, news, odds, kickoff time

Getty Images

It was a match that looked set to be No. 1 against No. 2 just a couple weeks ago, but now Juventus is a heavy favorite when it takes on fourth-place Lazio on Monday to finish up Matchday 34 in Serie A in Turin with Cristiano Ronaldo starting in attack. Juve is 25-5-4 and with a five-point lead over Inter Milan with a chance to move eight points clear here. Lazio had lost three in a row and four of its last six before a draw on Wednesday, ending any chance of a title challenge with its goal scoring going missing.

Here’s how you can watch the match and what to know:

Match informationDate: Monday, July 20Time: 3:45 p.m. ETLocation: Allianz Stadium — Turin, ItalyTV: Rai Italia — North AmericaLive stream: ESPN+ (English) and Rai Italia (Italian) — stream via fuboTV (Try for free) Odds: Juve -220; Draw +360; Lazio +575 (via William Hill Sportsbook) Storylines

Juventus: Three games without a win for Juve, and the notion of being a great defensive team is all of a sudden being questioned. The club has scored seven goals in its last three games, drawing two and losing one. In that span, they conceded nine times which is the same amount they had conceded in their previous 12 games. The defense has been out of sync, slow to react and quite frankly in a funk. The pressure is on to get things going defensively with a big month ahead.

Lazio: A run at the title has fallen off the rails with a great attack that has simply lacked sharpness. The quality and creativity is there, but the execution hasn’t been. With Juve struggling, this could be the time to get the attack going and all but wrap up a Champions League spot. With Lazio playing wide with fine in the middle, expect a lot of low balls into the box in the wing with Juve somehow struggling with those as of late.

Prediction

Cristiano Ronaldo scores and sets another up in a strong showing at home. Pick: Juventus 2, Lazio 0

Chelsea FC vs. Manchester United: Live stream, TV, how to watch FA Cup online, news, time, odds

Watch Now:
Manchester United Stays Alive In Champions League
(1:07)

Manchester United and Chelsea face off at Wembley Stadium on Sunday for a spot in the 2020 FA Cup final with Christian Pulisic on the bench for the Blues. United did the double on the Blues in the Premier League and enter the game in quality form, though the team did drop points last time out against Southampton at home after conceding a late goal. Arsenal upset Manchester City on Saturday, 2-0. Team news is expected shortly.

For live updates of the match, click here. Here’s how you can watch the match and what to know:

Viewing informationDate: Sunday, July 19Time: 1 p.m. ETLocation: Wembley Stadium — London, EnglandTV: NoneLive stream: ESPN+Odds: Man. United +140; Draw +235; Chelsea +195 (via William Hill Sportsbook) Live updates: Chelsea vs. UnitedStorylines

Chelsea: The Blues want revenge. In two loses to United, Chelsea has conceded six goals and has failed to score. And that is against a defense in United that isn’t all that sharp. Pulisic has grown as a player since their last meeting in February and Olivier Giroud is playing well up top. Expect Chelsea to create many more chances this time around.

Man. United: The Red Devils enter this contest on a 19-match unbeaten streak and will feel strong about making it 20 with Anthony Martial in great form in attack. This team with Bruno Fernandes in the middle is playing as well as any in England. United will have its fair share of chances, but it will just need to play keep its fullbacks a bit back and keep an eye on Chelsea’s dangerous wing play.

Chelsea vs. Manchester United prediction

Pulisic puts in a good shift, but United scores in each half to advance. Pick: Man United 2, Chelsea 1
